The Dress Code

The Dress Code: New Formals

When it comes to stepping up your formal footwear game, the devil is in the details…

As the structure of the modern work week continues to change, so too does the concept of office-appropriate dress. Stiff suiting is no longer the prerequisite as most businesses adopt a more relaxed dress code: think smart separates, designer T-shirts replacing the crisp white shirt, the rise of athleisure etc. And while we continue to champion the trainer as a fresh addition to smart attire, this season we're turning our focus to what we consider to be a renaissance of the formal shoe.

From the monk-strap to the embossed loafer, meet the footwear that proves a little extra detail can really shake up the game.

Scholar SHOP THIS LOOK Trusty brogues are those rare shoes you can safely tuck away in your wardrobe and years later pull them back out. The Scholar takes all the hallmarks of the traditional brogue, but its quality leather sole offers a hardy wear while its lasered wingtips provide a polished finish. Don't just pull them out for occasions; wear them at the weekend with jeans and a suede leather jacket for a collectedly cool off-duty look.

Spirited SHOP THIS LOOK Don't be so quick to dismiss the tasselled loafer. The favoured formal of, say, your grandad is enjoying a revival thanks to the nostalgia trend dictating so much of what we do and wear lately. Think of the Spirited shoes as an opportunity to show a little personality on your feet. If the tassels don't get you noticed, the sleek plait trim along the front surely will.

Sandstone SHOP THIS LOOK The glory days of the monk-strap shoe are once more. Laser detailing gives the Sandstone's classic silhouette a newfound sleekness and its rich brown colour suggests a staple that's a cut above the rest in terms of smartness. Our favourite feature, though, is the contrasting sole, which immediately awards the shoe a versatility that looks the part with occasion suiting as much as it does with trousers and a white T.

Sprinkles SHOP THIS LOOK The loafer is sometimes overlooked in the formal footwear category, but we are putting it on a pedestal this spring/summer. Chevron embossing provides the Sprinkles with a pleasing, fashion-led texture while the deep-black and navy-blue colourways will work wonderfully with a myriad of outfits. Emulate continental cool and wear them with a stone linen suit, pale blue shirt and aviators.
