Getting Hitched Brazilian Style

If you're planning on saying 'I do' any time soon, a great place to take inspiration from is Brazil. With its colourful culture and carnival spirit, these guys definitely know how to party - and weddings are no exception. The Romano-Fabrini sisters got married with a few years of each other in their home town of Belo Horizonte. Last week we admired English teacher Carolina's photos - this week it's photographer Laura's turn to take us through her wedding snaps.

When planning your wedding, what part for you was the most important (dress? decorations? theme? location?) The most important aspect for all of us was that our guests enjoy themselves and have fun without any formalities. So we searched for a location that felt like ‘home from home’.

When I started to try wedding dresses on, it felt like I was going to a costume party - but I would be the only one in fancy dress!

What is typical about a Brazilian wedding? Are there any interesting traditions us Brits wouldn't know about? I´m not sure if this only happens in Brazil, but at most weddings, we have things like the bride writing the name of her girlfriends inside the trimming of the dress to wish them luck on getting a husband. Also, there isn’t normally one best man – instead there are several couples. At the end of the wedding party, the guests use to receive a special little cake filled with caramel called Bem Casado, which means ‘well married'.

What was your favourite part of the wedding? The groom, no doubt! And the feeling that what we had was the best wedding and party we could ever have! Plus my sister officiating at the ceremony… Wow, it´s so hard to find just one!

I wore heels for the ceremony and the beginning of the party, but after the first dance I put on some cute flip-flops.

Were you happy with the dress? Yes! Yes! Yes! I hadn’t been dreaming about my ideal wedding dress for years, so when I started to try dresses on it felt like I was going to a costume party, but I would be the only one in fancy dress! But that feeling went away as the day drew closer. All the dresses I tried on at first were so out of my budget - even those available to rent. Then I found Fabiana Nunes, a great dressmaker, friend and psychologist. She found out everything I wanted and put in all into my dress.

Where did you get married and why? We got married in our home town, in a place called Espaço InCasa, whose name suggests feeling at home, which is exactly what we were after.

What were the shoes like? Did you wear flats or heels? When shoe shopping I find it so hard to find the exact ones I’m looking for - and it was no different for my wedding shoes. I searched for months and months and still didn’t find what I was after. But they were beautiful heels anyway. I wore them for the ceremony and the beginning of the party, but after the first dance I put on some cute flip-flops.
